The climate does half the work

Whakatāne consistently records some of the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. That means a longer swimming season than most of the country gets, and less reliance on heating to make the pool usable either side of summer.

It also means shade matters. A pool with nowhere to get out of the sun gets used in bursts rather than all afternoon, so planning where the shade and seating go is part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Ground on the flats and at the coast

Whakatāne's river flats are generally good ground to work in, though silt and a variable water table are worth checking before excavation rather than after. Out at Ōhope the ground is sandier and closer to the sea, which brings the same groundwater consideration as the coastal sections further west, relevant to how the pool is set and to never draining it without advice.

Properties up on the hills behind the town are a different job again, where slope and access lead the design.

Working out of the Tauranga end of the Bay

We are based at the Tauranga end, and we install in Whakatāne regularly. What that means practically is that we schedule the eastern jobs properly rather than running back and forth. The crew comes and works, rather than dropping in for half a day at a time.

It also means being straight about the programme. You get a schedule that reflects the travel, not an optimistic one that quietly slips.

Coastal hardware at Ōhope

Ōhope sections take the same salt exposure as any coastal property. The shell is unaffected, but gate hardware, fixings and equipment housings need to be specified for it, particularly the pool gate, which has to keep self-closing and self-latching reliably for the barrier to stay compliant between inspections.

Which pools suit Whakatāne sections

Town sections here are often more generous than their Tauranga equivalents, so the family models are usually on the table: The Acclaim, The Absolute, or a longer Elegance. At Ōhope, where sections narrow towards the beach, The Esprit and The Reflection make better use of the shape. With this much sun, a cover is worth having regardless of which shell you choose.
